Can you be made to reimburse an insurance company if you in an accident and your insurance has lapsed

State laws differ but in general yes, if you were at fault in an accident and caused damages to another party which their insurance company paid, that insurer can now come after you for the monies they paid out since your insurance policy was not in effect (lapsed) at the time of the accident and you were at fault.

My 16 yr. old son and I both have separate policies can I set them both up on the same online account for easy access and payments

While in many cases you can mange your account online if you have purchased your insurance policy through our Internet site for security reasons we are unable to combine separate policies onto the same online account. We are serious about online security and we make sure every transaction is secure. We value and take extra steps for our customer's security. It is our highest priority. We recognize that some of these security requirements can create user experience limitations.

In New York State, insurance companies consider a driver "inexperienced" if they have had less than 3 years of driving. Are they looking for 3 years of insured driving, or 3 years of licensed driving in order to become experienced? In other words, if you were under your own or someone else's policy versus just having a license for 3 years

The insurance company will look at the number of years you have held your driver's license for the "inexperienced period." The insurance company insuring you may also be interested however in how long you have been insured, not for the "inexperience surcharge" but as another rating factor. If you have a car in your household you should have been on an insurance policy, either your own if you owned a car or your parents if they had a car that they allowed you to drive.

You list a no charge violation as resulting in zero points. What would constitute a no charge violation? Would sliding off the road but not being cited or reported by the police be a no charge violation, even though I have damage to my car

We assume you are referencing our answer to this question: How do points affect your insurance rates? The insurance company determines which infractions, incidents, or violations that they classify as a No Charge Violation. To give you better reference, here is a list of violations that one company has selected as no-charge violations in their rating algorithm in some states:

I am under 18, and received a speeding ticket in Vermont. In Massachusetts (where I live and got my license) one speeding ticket can result in suspension of my license, what will happen

Vermont is part of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) while your home state of Massachusetts is not. While Massachusetts is not a member of the Drivers License compact but the MA Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) has agreements so that the state still shares and receives driving record and violation information with other states. Most offenses committed in other states will be put on your MA driving record and be treated by the RMV as if it occurred in state.

My 20-year old son attending college in Texas visited me for Christmas in Georgia. He received a speeding ticket on the highway in GA & the ticket read 83 in a 55 mile zone. If I pay the fine for him in GA will the points show up on his MVR where he is insured & licensed in Texas

If your son pleads guilty and pays the fine for the Georgia speeding ticket then yes, it will likely be placed on his Texas driving record. Texas is a member of the Drivers License Compact (DLC) which Georgia is not however GA still shares information with other states regarding moving violations drivers were convicted of.

What is an SR-22 form

SR-22 insurance varies state to state. The basic definition of an SR-22 form is available on our Insurance Terms page. SR-22 isn't a type of insurance, but rather proof that you have certain types of insurance (based upon the financial responsbility laws of your state).

What are the cheapest cars to insure for a 16 year old girl or boy

In most cases, the less expensive the car is to buy, the less expensive it is to insure. In addition, domestic vehicles are usually less expensive to insure as are 4 door cars, 4 cylinder motors and minivans.

I just got a speeding ticket. How much will it affect my auto insurance premium

If it was your first ticket, you might not see any change in your rates. Some states have laws governing when and why auto insurers can change policyholders' premiums; often, insurers are not allowed to raise your rates after just one speeding ticket or other citation. Different companies have different practices when it comes to raising premiums. Some companies will consider the severity of your violation and raise your rates accordingly; others will raise rates a specific amount per violation.
