Letter: Your Say - Let Off Lightly ; In Association With POST OFFICE

By W Mieczynski I READ the Birmingham Magistrates' Court section. A driver was fined pounds 50 and had his licence left intact. With fines like that I will be surprised if anybody will bother with car insurance. My 10-year-old car with a full no-claim bonus costs me pounds 365. A parking fine is pounds 60 and clampers can hijack a car and demand ransom money as much as pounds 450. Insurance is 10 times more serious than parking, but some magistrates think differently. EDITORIAL: Auto Insurance

Jan. 7--The General Assembly will begin a study this month on auto-insurance rates, and state motorists deserve a good explanation of why our coverage is the way it is today. About one in every four North Carolinians is covered through the massive N.C. Reinsurance Facility for risky drivers. That risk pool is larger than any similar mechanism anywhere else in America.
